Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) - MS in Canada
Most universities in Canada require non-native English speakers to provide proof of English language abilities at the time of application. Certification/tests from only standardized organizations are generally accepted as evidence for your mastery in English. The Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) is one such pre-requisite exam which can be submitted as evidence for your proficiency in English. It is conducted by Educational Testing Service (ETS), the same service which conducts the GRE.

Before You Start
- Check your Master's program’s pre-requisites to see if the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) is necessary.
- Even though your bachelor's was taught in English, you must provide some other proof; this document comes in handy during the Canadian Study Permit procedures as well.
- The exam is either an Internet-Based Test (TOEFL iBT)/Paper-Based Test (TOEFL PBT). Generally, iBT is conducted globally. India provides the iBT Tests. PBT Exams are taken in only a few places around the globe.
- India provides internet based TOEFL iBT Tests.

Step by step guide
- Visit the ETS TOEFL Website; click on Register for the Test or you can directly go to the TOEFL Registration Page
- Go to ‘Register Online’. Set Language Preference for English.
- Create a New Account.
- Enter your details under the Profile Information. The fields are self-explanatory.
- Set a Username-Password which can be easily remembered; answer the Security Question.
- Read the Acknowledgement and Terms and Conditions shown. Then click on the radio box to agree.
- Review all the details for the last time and check if they are correct. Your Name, DOB, Gender cannot be changed after the account is created.
- You will get a confirmation e-mail to your account. Verify it for completing your registration.
- Sign in with the new log-in credentials.
- You will be redirected to the My TOEFL Homepage. Your ETS ID will be visible at the top.
- Enter the location & choose the 2 months during which you can give the TOEFL.
- Click on ‘Find Test Centers and Dates’
- You will now see all the available dates (marked in green).
- Select a Test Date. You will see the respective Test Centers where you can take the exam.
- Choose the closest Test Centre and see the respective Test Timings.
- Click on ‘Register’ for a suitable location and timing.
- Fill in all details of the Identification and Background Research. Submit it.
- You shall now see the online Payment page, where you have to pay $180 (extra late-registration fee too if you are late).
After You Register
- An e-mail confirming the exam payment will be sent. It will also contain all access details to your ETS Account.
- Open your ETS Account, using either the TOEFL App or the website and check ‘Upcoming Tests’ to see if your registration has been successfully done.

On the Test Day
- Arrive at least 30 mins before the test. If you come late, you might not be permitted, and the exam fee will not be refunded.
- Bring a valid ID with you. We suggest that you carry your Passport as Identification Proof.
- ETS might also confirm your identity through a Biometric voice and photo identification/fingerprints scans/video recording/signature comparison.
- The Test Centre Staff will guide you on the preliminary steps.
- You will be required to place all the belongings in a separate location as advised by the test center staff.
- There might also be extra body-check where you will need to empty out your pockets, raise your pants a bit to check around the ankle or even pull up the sleeves. This is just to ensure you will not be cheating
Test Results
- The TOEFL iBT assesses you on 4 different skills :
- Reading Section (marked between 0–30),
- Listening Section (marked between 0–30),
- Speaking Section (scored between 0–30), and
- Writing Section (scored between 0–30).
- The Total Scoring is on a total of 120.
- Your exam scores will be on the website in about 6 working days after your test date.
- You can send the test scores directly to 4 institutions (which need to be informed before the test). You can also request for additional score reports for a fee of $20 each.
Useful Tips
- You need about 8-12 weeks to prepare for the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL), depending on your current English language proficiency.
- Also, it takes nearly 6 calendar days for the exam scores to be published on the website.
- Be calm and peaceful.
- Take multiple mock tests to improve your performance.
- ETS TOEFL scores are valid for 2 years.
